A powerful expression of southern Margaret River Chardonnay!

Head Somm James Boden says: “Cassiodorus was one of the first wines that I sold in Perth and remains one of my favourite wines to sell. This is from Mark Warren (Marq Wines) and is basically premium Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon made in an Amarone style. Amarone is a wine in Veneto, northern Italy that is made by drying the grapes on racks. This gives the wine an intense, dried spice and fruit note that is sought after in the region. The Cassiodorus Cabernet is no exception with similar dried fruit and spicy notes…delicious!”

65% Sauvignon Blanc, 35% Semillon. A cool season produced slow ripening of the fruit, with flavour ripeness occurring at a lower than normal sugar level. This contributed to an aromatic profile with fresh passionfruit, lemon sherbet, lime blossom and herbs. The palate enjoys the same flavours with partial barrel fermentation supporting the fruit and helping to enhance texture and fruit weight. Delicate mineral acidity drives the wine and provides a long and crisp finish.

This is the first time we have utilized our block of semillon for a dessert wine. We love semillon and its unique varietal characters are on show in this sticky unctuous style. Bright lifted lime blossom, apricot and fresh herb aromas excite the senses before delivering a sweet bomb of delicate fruit entwined in mineral acidity, which drives the wine and provides a long and balanced finish. This wine will integrate and resolve further, and develop texture and more complexity over time, improving for many years to come. It drinks beautifully now but will reward patience for those willing to wait 5-15 years.

An unexpected treat from Margaret River.

Inspired by the Rosé wines of Southern France this is our attempt at a ‘Serious’ Rosé. Lifted floral, cherry and strawberry characters with hints of citrus, lemon butter and gun smoke.

Margaret River, WA

A lifted aroma of red currant, violets, raspberry and blueberry with hints of cranberry, tomato leaf, cola and green plum. It is a medium bodied richly flavoured wine with attractive sweet fruit displaying red fruits, plum skin, raspberry coulis and red capsicum with notes of sarsaparilla, rhubarb and pomegranate. This wine is noticeably soft with fine slightly chalky tannins juicy and fleshy with noticeable oak that adds just an element of grip and structure to this otherwise silky soft wine.

Mark is one of my favourite winemakers in Margs and this is one of my go to Vermentino’s. Native to Sardiania but grown extensively in Italy, this varietal sits somewhere in the middle of Riesling, Viognier and Albarino depending on the producer and growing conditions. This particular vintage for Marq wines looks like a salty apricot riesling and jumps almost jumps out of the glass at you.

Head Somm James Boden says: “Murray McHenry is the creator of this winery and I tip my cap to Murray for not only this amazing winery but also for his outstanding bottle shop “Steve’s” in Nedlands in Perth. When I tried the range of wines, I could have bought them all but the standout (just) was this wine. The GSM shows pristine blue fruit, brambly savoury notes and grip at the back end which combines to produce a stunning GSM. Well done all who were involved in this wine.”

This wine combines the zesty citrus freshness of Semillon with the exotic passionfruit and guava of Sauvignon blanc. Fermentation and ageing on yeast lees in seasoned oak adds layer of creamy texture to the wine.

Pierro is incredibly concentrated and complex chardonnay showcasing the best of Margaret River. Vinified in Burgundian fashion, barrel fermented in new (50%) and one-year-old French oak. The wine is rich in lemon curd, grapefruit, white peach and cashew nut aromas.

A Grenache Rose' from Margaret River that shows the serious side of the style.

Remi is one of the new kids on the block in Margaret River with a focus on Chenin Blanc and other varietals aside from the typical Chardonnay and Cab Sauv. This is his Wilyabrup Chenin which is Northern Margs and it is heartening to see a rise again in this varietal. Just ripe apple, a touch of honey and texture for days!

On the nose there are varietal aromas of violets, blackcurrants/cassis, plum, cherry, mulberry and crushed wild herbs along with cedar, vanilla and spice from the French oak. the palate is rich and juicy with ripe berry fruits framed by silky tannins some mocha vanilla and a long satisfying finish.

From a sandy vineyard on the sea side (~2km to Indian Ocean) of Caves Road in southern Yallingup. The fruit was hand-picked and wild fermented using cloudy juice in tank, to layer texture. No added acid, no malolactic, the wine has not been filtered nor fined to retain the natural texture of the wine. Slightly more weight and mouthfeel than the super elegant 2017; vintage variation at its finest. Saline, citrus with texture.

Head Somm James Boden says: "Nick and Sarah are the husband/wife team behind Wines of Merritt, producing small batch wines out of Margaret River. The Cabernet Franc is very small batch - only 24 dozen produced or one barrel. A touch of green capsicum but in a good way, nice fruit and good tannin structure.”
